about
I often write songs with performance in mind. When I do this, I don’t picture myself onstage shimmying, rocking and or rolling. I think of the opportunity that is given to all of us - performers, and audience members to participate in the creation of something larger than the sum of its parts. When I’m at a great show, I am feeling something beyond the performance, beyond the crowd. I see the proof in those moments that beautiful things happen when people gather simply for the sake of beauty. For occasions like this, I wanted a song to commemorate such serendipity, to deliberately call attention to the miracle that we are creating all together. The lyrics are simple, but I mean them, and often before I play this song, I’ll ask the crowd to look around and remember how lucky we all are to find each other in places like that.
lyrics
Well, I don’t think I know you, but I know that I like you
Get along now, we can get along
It’s not because I need to and it’s not because I’ve got to
Get along now, we can get along
I don’t know where you’ve been, but I know that you’re here
Get along now, we can get along
And it feels pretty good just to have you near
Get along now
So I hope that we can get along
You were sent to this world and I was sent here, too
Get along now, we can get along
Where there’s so much to see and so much to do
Get along now, we can get along
Baby what can be done, it can be done together
Get along now, we can get along
And that will be true between now and forever
Get along now
So I hope that we can get along
Well, I’m not too shy and I’m not too cool
Get along now, we can get along
And I don’t think I’m too hip for that golden rule
Get along now, we can get along
And if there’s one thing I know, it’s that I don’t know a lot
Get along now, we can get along
But if it’s a friend that you need, then it’s a friend that you’ve got
Get along now
So I hope that we can get along

I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live in San Diego in a very intimate set. His music just brings me a deep state of comfort, like listening to a friend.
